Woodland Coppicing - Techniques in Sustainable Tree Management
In common with many professional tree surgeons and tree care experts Bawden Tree Care are interested in establishing sustainable woodlands using tried and tested techniques such as coppicing.
Coppicing involves felling trees at the base just above ground level, usually on a repetitive basis, but allowing them to re-grow and hence providing a sustainable source of timber. Coppicing should be completed in late winter or early spring just before the sap begins rising and growth activity commences.
As well as providing a supply of timber coppicing can also help increase woodland biodiversity, keeping specimens coppiced can allow more light to reach the floor of the woodland, allowing other flora and fauna to establish many of which are food sources for insects and bugs alike.
Not all coppicing is about working in woodlands, coppicing trees and shrubs in the domestic garden will also provide benefits. Managing trees in this way will keep specimens an appropriate size for their location, reduce shade, restrict the volume of leaf fall which can block gutters and damage lawns, and also help control the spread of rooting systems which might cause damage to foundations. In the domestic garden regular coppicing can provide useful bean sticks for the vegetable garden.
Ideal tree specimens for coppicing are:
- Hazel (Corylus)
- Hornbeam (Carpinus)
- Beech (Fagus sylvatica)
- Willow (Salix)
- Yew (Taxus)
These are just a few, there are many more.
Many trees are protected, specifically through a Tree Preservation Order, or collectively by the fact they are located within a designated Conservation Area. It is therefore essential that the status of any tree is checked with the Local Planning Authority before coppicing work commences, if protected an application needs to be submitted seeking permission. Bawden Tree Care will make the necessary enquiries of the Local Authoirty as part of the quotation process and if required submit an application on the customer’s behalf. This administrative process is provided by Bawden Tree Care at not additional cost to the customer.
